CFP « Get ready for the Next Big Thing

CFP

ALL CFP’s ARE NOW CLOSED!

BSides Las Vegas isn’t another “talk at you” conference. Everyone at BSides is a Participant.

Track after track, year after year, the security researchers, engineers, analysts and managers that present at BSidesLV are looking to engage our participants and be engaged by them. They want your feedback, insights, opinions and questions on the latest InfoSec topics and discussions of the Next Big Thing.

Our presenters don’t talk at you, they converse with you.

Come join the conversation!

BSidesLV Tracks

BSidesLV 2015 will consist of seven main speaking tracks and one workshop track. It will also include PasswordsLV, however they have a separate CFP.

  • Proving Ground – Mentorship and Scholarship track for first time national speakers. Get paired with a great mentor, who will help you with your presentation from CFP to podium AND receive up to $500 to help offset the costs of traveling to Vegas to present. More specific information below.
  • Breaking Ground – Ground Breaking Information Security research and conversations on the “Next Big Thing”. Interactively discussing your research with our participants and getting feedback, input and opinion. No preaching from the podium at a passive audience.
  • Common Ground – Other topics of interest to the security community. e.g., Lock-picking, hardware hacking, mental health/burnout, Law, Privacy, Regulations, Risk, Crypto, Activism, etc. Again, interactive discussions with your peers and fellow researchers. Not passive lectures “at” an audience.
  • Underground – OTR talks on subjects best discussed AFK. No press, no recording, no streaming, no names. Just you and your peers, behind closed doors. Think about it.
  • Training Ground – This track consists of workshops and classes to give your students hands-on experience learning the latest and greatest. We accept proposals for 1/2 day, full-day and 2-day workshops.
  • Ground Truth – This  track is focused on innovative computer science and mathematics applied to security. Topics of interest include machine learning, natural language processing, Big Data technologies, cryptography, compression, data structures, zero knowledge proofs or just about anything academically publishable that usually baffles review committees for other conferences.
  • Above The Ground Plane – The team that brings you the Wireless Village at DEFCON and the Wireless Capture the Flag contests at multiple conferences throughout the year is organizing a new speaking track for BSidesLV. The Above The Ground Plane track will consist of any and all forms of exciting hacks and unusual uses of wireless technology. Think you have something new and exciting, spread your spectrum and come share it. Trust us, you ohm it to yourself.

BSidesLV Proving Ground Speaker Development Program

Hello everyone, it is again time for  BSidesLV to open up the Call For Paper (CFP) for our “Proving Ground” track! The Proving Ground track was created in order to give speakers who have never spoken at a national conference (regional conferences and other BSides events not included) a means to give a talk during one of the biggest weeks for the hacker and information security community. We pair all accepted speakers with a mentor, who will assist them with everything from talking points, slide layout and design, and delivery before giving your talk in Las Vegas, Nevada. The goal is to help new speakers get comfortable with delivering talks in hopes that they will continue sharing their ideas and unique perspectives with the rest of the community.

The process will work like this: you as our potential speakers will be asked for an abstract for a 20 minute talk that you would like help preparing for presentation using the link below. Once our CFP review team has made their decisions as to which talks will be presented, a list of all the abstracts will go out to our Mentor List. The mentors will then states which three talks they would like to help with, based on the mentor’s area(s) of expertise. After all presentations have been assigned mentors, an introductory email will go out to every pair so that the presenter and mentor can begin working with one another preparing an outline and presentation. Once this is completed, the presenter will practice their talk with their mentor via Skype, Google Hangouts, etc. in order to work on timing, inflection, message, and body language. On the day of the presentation, the speakers will have their mentor present in order to give them a “friendly face” in the audience as well as assist them with Q&A, should it be needed

Proving Ground is augmented by a Scholarship program. Should you need or want it, and your talk is accepted, BSidesLV will provide you with a Scholarship of up to $500, to help you offset the costs of traveling to Vegas to present. Scholarships will be paid out after you have successfully completed your presentation, when you turn in your program evaluation form. If you’re interested in taking advantage of this program, please indicate so, where requested, on the CFP submission form. Good Luck!
