Violet Blue – Silence Equals Death
Sex, drugs and… censorship? This talk includes the Sex + Drugs talk that was censored under duress at BSides San Francisco, and begins by exploring why no topics should ever be off limits in hacker communities – and especially, why no topic should ever be off limits because there are women in the room. Solutions are offered to the community for current dilemmas posed by sex-negative and anti-harm reduction acts by feminist extremists in hacker communities. This Common Grounds Keynote also serves as an introduction to community-focused concepts – including the very necessary refusal to be silenced.
BIO: Violet Blue is a ZDNet, c|net, and CBS News journalist, a sex educator, tech speaker, crisis counselor and volunteer NGO trainer – Blue is known for being outspoken and controversial. She lost a domain to Libya, was famously yelled at by Steve Jobs, her name was the locus of Google nymwars, she was the 1st female podcaster and won a Federal lawsuit to stop an impersonator (in name, likeness and sex ed); she was the San Francisco Chronicle’s sex columnist. Violet is regularly censored, and she is equally at home in a machine shop, parked on the floor of a conference with her laptop, or on one of her motorcycles. Her sharp editorial eye and skill as an author wins awards for her 40+ sex ed and erotica books, which have been translated into several languages. Blue is not just a pundit on sex and tech but also strives to be an agent of change, and to raise the bar for discussion on critical issues that affect at-risk populations.
